ASK. CLARIFY. CHECK. — TEACHING SAMPLE Illustrated teaching sample narrated by Emma, an Australian AI voice. Use alongside the full interview lesson and practical exercises. Ask. Clarify. Check. In a workplace investigation, your questions should help someone explain their own account. Let us compare a leading question with an open question. Notice the assumption He was angry with you, wasn’t he? That question supplies an interpretation and invites agreement. It may shape the answer before you have heard the person’s account. Start with an open invitation Instead, ask: Please talk me through what happened. Listen without rushing to fill a pause. Let the person describe events in their own words. Then clarify the detail Then clarify: What words do you remember hearing? Ask one question at a time. Distinguish what they personally heard from what someone else later told them. Your turn Your turn. She deliberately excluded you, didn’t she? How could you ask about what happened without assuming intention? Pause the video and try your own wording. One possible starting question One possible starting question is: Please describe how the meeting invitations were arranged. Follow up on the answer and explore other explanations. An open question is a starting point, not the whole enquiry. Check your understanding Finally, summarise what you understood and invite corrections. Ask, clarify, check. Use this pattern alongside the full interview guidance and practical exercises.
