A practical learning journey for people who are new to workplace investigations. Build your understanding step by step, from recognising a complaint and selecting an appropriate response through to gathering evidence, interviewing fairly and writing reasoned findings.
Your learning journey
- Begin with six foundation lessons that explain key terms, complaint types, investigation pathways and the investigator’s role.
- Work through ten modules covering intake, planning, procedural fairness, interviews, evidence, findings, reporting and closure.
- Practise with guided scenarios, worked examples, reflection activities and knowledge checks.
- Complete a final case-based assessment, including a main case portfolio, five required short written transfer scenarios (approximately 300–500 words each) and a written interview and evidence assessment. All five scenarios must be satisfactory alongside the main portfolio, written interview and evidence assessment and required knowledge checks.
Build careful, evidence-based practice
The course will help you explain your decisions, recognise the limits of your authority and identify when specialist advice is needed. You will also practise recognising protected reports and overlapping processes, commissioning and privilege questions, shared-workplace responsibilities, and safeguards for children and young workers. This does not qualify learners to conduct specialist child forensic interviews. Applicable laws, sector requirements and organisational procedures must be checked for each matter.
Your next step: Begin with Foundation 1 and work through the course in order. Your access lasts 12 months from enrolment. Complete the knowledge checks and practical assessment requirements to earn your certificate. For help, email glen@synergywi.com.au.
New learning: responsible AI use
Updated 20 October 2026. Module 8 now includes a practical section explaining the Fair Work Commission’s GenAI guidance, with interview and evidence reminders in Modules 5 and 6. Work through the example, practice questions and checklist in Topic 8.3 — Using AI responsibly in workplace investigations. Use the FWC’s official GenAI resources to check the current requirements before preparing a real Commission filing.
Feedback, resubmission and review
Glen Thomasen will assess your written work against the published criteria. We aim to provide feedback within five business days of receiving a complete submission. Your enrolment includes the initial assessment and two resubmissions for each assessment task. A file upload is not an assessment attempt by itself: multiple files belonging to one submission count as one attempt. Keep the original, feedback and revised version.
If further work is needed after the two included resubmissions, contact glen@synergywi.com.au to agree the next step before doing more work; no further attempt or fee is assumed. If you dispute a result, email Glen identifying the criterion, decision and evidence in question. A second suitably qualified assessor can review the assessment. You will receive a written review outcome explaining the reasons. Contact Glen for the review arrangements and expected timeframe. No interview booking is required.
You must log in and have started this course to submit a review.
