Synergy Workplace Investigations delivered a tailored reportable incident investigations workshop for Nexus Inc., a disability support provider located in Hobart. Seven participants took part in the training, led by our very own Corey from the Synergy team.

The one-day workshop brought the investigation process to life through practical disability-sector scenarios, following a matter from the first incident notification through to reporting, organisational decisions and closure.

Practical training built around the disability sector

The training focused on the decisions people need to make throughout an investigation: what must happen immediately, who is responsible, and what evidence may be at risk before interviews even begin.

Recurring case studies helped participants connect each stage of the process. A fictional financial exploitation scenario provided a practical setting for considering safeguarding, evidence preservation, investigation planning and communication with participants and families.

The workshop also explored how investigators work alongside operations, HR, safeguarding, compliance and organisational decision-makers. This shared understanding was central to the tailored approach.

From planning and interviews to clear reporting

Corey guided the group through key areas including:

  • Immediate incident response, role allocation and early evidence preservation.
  • Investigation scope, independence, procedural fairness and confidentiality.
  • Practical planning tools, including evidence registers, chronologies and stakeholder maps.
  • Interview preparation, effective questions and communication adapted for people with disability.
  • Assessing evidence, considering conflicting information and avoiding premature conclusions.
  • Structured reports, communicating outcomes and recording corrective actions and organisational learning.

Rather than treating these topics as separate steps, the training showed how early decisions can shape the quality of the entire investigation.

Creating space for cross-team discussion

Feedback from the Nexus team highlighted the value of working through the material together:

“We all enjoyed the course which prompted good cross-team discussions, among other things.”

Thank you to Nexus and the seven participants for making time to explore these important investigation responsibilities with Corey.
